Certified Internal Family Systems TherapistWhen “normal” goes unquestioned, therapy can quietly reinforce what needs to be healed.
Ableism can live inside everyday assumptions about productivity, wellness, intelligence, emotional regulation, independence, communication, aging, and what it means to be “high-functioning” or “doing well.”
This program invites IFS practitioners to slow down and notice the water we swim in: the cultural narratives that shape our expectations of clients, our interpretations of parts, and even our own internal systems.
Through an IFS lens, participants will explore how ableist beliefs may become internalized as burdens within both clients and practitioners — contributing to exile, protective adaptations, shame-based identities, implicit bias, and therapeutic blind spots. The course also invites a wider view of healing: one that does not ask clients to assimilate into dominant norms, but instead supports diverse ways of knowing, being, expressing, healing, and belonging.
This is a program for clinicians who want to bring more humility, precision, and Self-energy into their work with disability, neurodivergence, mental health conditions, aging, chronic illness, and other body-mind differences.
Through this Continuity program, participants will learn to:
- Recognize ableism, sanism, and ageism as cultural burdens that shape ideas of normality, disability, difference, and human value.
- Notice how internalized ableism can shape client and practitioner systems, including exile, protective strategies, shame, and implicit bias.
- Deepen Self-led engagement with power, privilege, humility, advocacy, accessibility, rupture repair, and collective responsibility.
- Bring disability-informed and liberation-oriented principles into IFS practice.
- Reimagine difference not as something to tolerate, minimize, or correct, but as an essential dimension of healthy, complex individual and collective life.

Curriculum
What You'll Learn
M1 September 2026 - Naming the Water We Swim In: Understanding Ableism and the Myth of Normal
This opening module introduces ableism as a pervasive cultural system that shapes ideas about worth, productivity, fitness, intelligence, emotional expression, and the ideal human.
Participants will explore how socially constructed ideas of “normal” become invisible standards against which body-mind differences are measured, ranked, and interpreted. Lara will invite participants to notice how these dominant assumptions can appear neutral or natural while shaping individual, relational, therapeutic, and collective experience.
This module creates the foundation for understanding ableism not only as an external social issue, but as a cultural burden that can influence the therapeutic field.
Participants will learn to:
- Define ableism and identify how beliefs about “normality” become embedded in culture, institutions, relationships, and mental health practice.
- Describe how ableist narratives shape perceptions of disability, difference, functioning, and human value.
- Recognize how ableism reflects broader dynamics of oppression, including entitlement, marginalization, and the privileging of one group’s experience over another.
M2 October 2026 - The Burden of Normal: Exile, Adaptation, and Internalized Ableism
This module explores how systems of oppression such as ableism become internalized within individuals and communities.
Participants will examine how dominant cultural narratives about ability, productivity, normality, and worth can shape self-image, perception, emotional expression, relational patterns, access to agency, and belonging. Through an IFS lens, Lara will explore how internalized ableism can contribute to shame-based identities, vulnerable parts carrying burdens, and protective systems that adapt to the “non-disabled gaze” of dominant culture.
Rather than approaching these adaptations as problems to correct, this module invites participants to understand them as survival-based responses within a wider cultural context.
Participants will learn to:
- Explain how dominant narratives about ability, productivity, and normality may become internalized by both clients and practitioners.
- Identify how internalized ableism and the “non-disabled gaze” may shape self-perception, emotional expression, relational patterns, and protective strategies.
- Describe how marginalization, exclusion, microaggressions, and internalized oppression can contribute to shame-based identities and the exile of vulnerable parts.
M3 November 2026 - Working with Internalized Ableism: Power, Privilege, and Questioning Therapeutic Neutrality
This module brings the exploration directly into clinical practice, with attention to non-apparent disabilities, energy-limiting conditions, neurodivergence, mental health conditions, and aging.
Participants will explore sanism and ageism as expressions of ableism rooted in the assumption that some ways of being — physically, mentally, emotionally, cognitively, or developmentally — are more valid, valuable, or “normal” than others.
Lara will examine how ableist assumptions about functioning, healing, communication, emotional regulation, autonomy, dependence, interdependence, and wellness can shape the therapeutic relationship. Participants will be invited to notice the practitioner parts that may arise around uncertainty, urgency, repair, competence, helplessness, or the desire to be “neutral.”
This module supports clinicians in developing more Self-led awareness of bias, power, privilege, and clinical responsibility.
Participants will learn to:
- Describe how disability, neurodivergence, mental health conditions, and aging may shape the development of protective and vulnerable parts.
- Identify how ableist narratives about wellness, functioning, autonomy, and emotional regulation can influence interpretation of clients’ experiences and protective systems.
- Apply strategies for reducing ableist, sanist, or ageist bias in therapeutic presence, case conceptualization, treatment planning, and consultation.
M4 December 2026 - Healing Beyond Normal: From Internal Healing to Collective Liberation
The final module invites participants into an anti-ableist IFS praxis shaped by disability justice, mad-affirming perspectives, liberation psychology, and healing beyond assimilation into dominant norms.
Participants will explore epistemic humility and epistemic justice: the practice of seeking out and respecting the knowledge of disabled, neurodivergent, aging, mad, raced, and otherwise marginalized communities. This module invites clinicians to stay present with the wider wounds created by ableist social and economic systems while also noticing how Self-energy may support truth-telling, accompaniment, advocacy, witness, solidarity, critical consciousness, and action.
Rather than framing healing as becoming more “normal,” this module asks what becomes possible when diverse forms of embodiment, cognition, expression, pacing, interdependence, and belonging are honored.
Participants will be invited to reimagine difference as an essential part of healthy, complex human life — not something to merely tolerate, but something to celebrate.
Participants will learn to:
- Hold space for diverse forms of embodiment, cognition, and expression without imposing normative assumptions about wellness, healing, or functioning.
- Describe the importance of marginalized and disabled ways of knowing in anti-oppressive therapeutic practice.
- Apply Self-led anti-ableist practice to clinical scenarios, including treatment goals, accessibility, pacing, advocacy, collective responsibility, and rupture repair.
