- Advocating for or encouraging any of the above behavior
Safety and Confidentiality
IFS Institute’s training programs and other learning events are not psychotherapy sessions. All components of the training or other learning event, including those components that are experiential in nature, are for the purpose of teaching the IFS model. Therefore, the interactions and information shared by Members are not privileged communications as they might be during actual therapy sessions.
And, in order to create and maintain an appropriate learning environment, all personal information that Members of the training program or other learning event disclose should be treated as confidential and should not be shared, by no means whatsoever, including social media, with persons who are not Members of the training program or other learning event, including family members, friends, social media groups, colleagues, participants, and Members of other training programs or learning events.
In addition, all Members must respect the confidentiality of the people with whom a Member is practicing and in the relevant small groups (e.g., Mentor Group, Reflection Group) and not discuss other’s work or experiences outside of these small groups (which includes not speaking about another’s work in this training program or other learning event’s large group), unless the concerned Member has provided their permission.
Confidential information may need to be disclosed if holding the information would (1) compromise anyone’s safety, health, or well-being, or (2) violate your ethical or legal responsibilities. Professional and licensing organizations, as well as states, provinces, and other governmental jurisdictions, may have specific and different policies regarding confidentiality for counselors, therapists, and other professionals. Training program Members are responsible for knowing their particular and applicable governing policies, and for adhering to their professional standards for confidentiality.
Participants and staff may not make audio or visual recordings of any part of any IFS training or learning event. Only IFS Institute or the official organizers of international IFS trainings or anyone authorized by them, may record pieces of a training or learning event.
IFSI reserves the right to pursue appropriate legal remedies and/or remove from and/or restrict access to IFS Institute trainings, learning events or social media platforms for any failure to abide by this Code of Conduct.
If you have a concern regarding the conduct of a member of the training, please contact the Trainers or relevant IFSI learning event staff who may contact the IFS Institute leadership as needed.
Medical Disclaimer and Personal Responsibility: The nature of IFS training program material and the learning process may stimulate psychological and emotional issues for participants. Training program participants are required to take responsibility for maintaining their own safety in IFSI training programs. In the event that a problematic therapeutic issue surfaces in the process of the training program, please let a training program staff member know as soon as possible. Depending on the issue, it may be helpful to discuss the issue with a personal therapist. If you are not currently in therapy and would like a referral, a staff member may be able to make a confidential referral.
IFS training programs are not substitutes for mental health care services, clinical diagnosis, or treatment, nor are the information or activities that IFS training programs provide intended to replace consultation with a qualified healthcare provider. Training program staff working remotely may not be able to help you, and cannot be expected to provide assistance should you experience a mental health or other emergency. If you are in crisis now or anytime, including during an IFS training program, please contact your local emergency services (for example, 911), or go to the nearest emergency room.
Training Staff: IFSI reserves the right to substitute training program staff whenever necessary without obligation to participants enrolled in the training program.
Dual/Multiple Relationships: IFSI is committed to maintaining the safety and ethics of its highly experiential training programs. To that end, IFSI is sensitive to the potential difficulties of any type of dual/multiple relationship between trainer and participant, or participant and participant. Therefore, IFSI requires that you review the roster for your training program (IFSI will provide it to you prior to the start of your training program) and determine if you are in a dual/multiple relationship with anyone. If you are in a dual/multiple relationship with someone, particularly (but not only) supervisory or therapeutic, you must contact that person and resolve the situation before the training program begins. In order to respect the confidentiality of your dual/multiple relationship, please address the situation directly. IFSI acknowledges that dual/multiple relationships need to remain confidential and, therefore, IFSI cannot be responsible for resolving them or for their existence in its training programs. It is the responsibility of the therapist in a therapist-client dual/multiple relationship, and of the supervisor in a supervisor-supervisee dual/multiple relationship to address the situation. Different states, provinces, and other governmental jurisdictions may have different policies regarding dual/multiple relationships for counselors, therapists, and other professionals for whom dual/multiple relationships may exist. Therefore, training program participants are expected to take responsibility for checking with their particular and applicable governing policies, and for adhering to the professional standards for dual/multiple relationships outlined therein. Participants in IFSI training programs are also expected to adhere to the governing policies of their professional disciplines regarding dual/multiple relationships. If a Lead, Co-Lead, Guest, or Assistant Trainer, Co-Lead Trainer Mentee, Assistant Trainer Mentee, or any other Trainer believes that they have a dual/multiple relationship with a training program applicant, the training program applicant may not enroll in this particular training program. As a participant in an IFSI training program, you take full responsibility for understanding the risks of entering into IFSI training programs with a dual/multiple relationship and for any issues that may arise in regard to dual/multiple relationships, and agree that any dual/multiple relationship issue does not exempt you from fulfilling your payment agreement.
Photography, Audio and Video Recording: IFS training program participants may not photograph or make audio or visual recordings of any part of any IFS training program session. IFSI or its agents may photograph and make audio and visual recordings of the training program’s sessions (excluding scheduled practice “breakout” groups and “home/reflection” groups) in order to facilitate the IFS trainer evaluation process, and the development and education of new and advancing trainers. The sharing and other distribution of these photographs and recordings is prohibited, except among select IFSI trainers, trainer candidates, and employees, as designated by IFSI. By being a participant in this training program, I agree and consent that any photographs and recordings may be used by IFSI as described above without additional prior notice or permission, and without compensation to me.
Health and Safety Protocols for On-site Sessions: IFSI follows the guidance of the training program site and/or relevant government agencies with respect to health and safety protocols for any portions of this training program held on-site. Everyone attending the training program must observe health and safety protocols at the training program site (for example, wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, being vaccinated, getting tested, etc.) if required by the training program site and/or relevant government agencies. Required protocols can change and be imposed or lifted at any time before the training program starts, and while the training program is in session.
IFS Institute reserves the right to admit or deny admission to any training program applicant.
IFSI-Initiated Withdrawal: IFSI, in its sole discretion, may withdraw a participant from an IFSI training program at any time for a violation of the training program’s Terms and Conditions or other policies or statements on this application, including one or more violations of the Code of Conduct. In addition, IFSI may withdraw a participant out of concern for the participant’s safety and well-being. When a participant is withdrawn by IFSI, IFSI will refund tuition paid to IFSI for portions of the training program the participant will not attend as a result of their withdrawal. However, if at any time IFSI learns that a participant misrepresented their credentials or other information during the Application and/or Registration processes, IFSI reserves the right to withdraw the participant before or after the training begins, without any refund. If a participant is withdrawn from a training program, they will not be eligible for the Certificate of Completion. Following an IFSI-initiated withdrawal, the participant is required to wait a minimum of two years before requesting to apply to another IFSI Level 1, 2 or 3 training program. Admittance to another IFSI Level 1, 2 or 3 training program after the waiting period will require that the participant be assessed for their ability to abide by the Code of Conduct and all other aspects of the Terms and Conditions and other IFSI policies. Admittance to a training program following the assessment does not guarantee that the participant will not be withdrawn from the training program. An IFSI-initiated withdrawal may also result in the participant being removed from the IFSI Directory and a review of their IFS Certification status, if either of those is relevant.
Withdrawals/Refunds: Participants who need to withdraw from the training program must do so in writing by emailing Training@IFS-Institute.com.
